M 47 is a bright open cluster visible in the constellation of Puppis, with an angular extension equal to that of the full moon.
M 47 comprises about 50 stars and is located at a distance of 1,600 light years from Earth; its estimated age is around 78 million years, resulting in a fairly young cluster. It is about one degree away from the open cluster M 46.
